There sure is shizzle to be happy about these last couple days, first and foremost it’s the fact that the NFL is back. Yes it’s only pre-season but I’ve had this terrible itch since the Giants upset the Patriots in the Super Bowl to get back to the couch and waste a good Saturday/Sunday in front of the TV watching a good mix of NCAA and NFL football. Before all you Canadian die hards try to chime in on the CFL game being on for the last couple months let me remind you that in comparison to the NFL and College game south of the border it fails…and fails miserably!
But I’m not here to debate between good and bad of the Canadian and American game, I’m here to give some shoutouts to some people for finally taking care of business to get me ready for what looks to be another somewhat solid winter.
First and foremost a special THANK YOU to the New York Jets for finally trading for disgruntled Packers quarterback Brett Favre. I truly cannot say thank you enough. This summer has been an absolute nightmare in regards to having to listen to whats going to happen to Favre. First we had to endure the “will he retire or wont he”, when he finally did retire he decided to do a nice flip flop and inform the media that he was leaning towards coming out of retirement. Yippee! So of course leading up to Packers training camp, and the lack of sports coverage on television, I had to endure endless hours of: “will he report to Packers training camp”, “will there be a QB controversy in Green Bay”, “Favre wants to be traded”, “Packers won’t trade Favre”, “Packers close to a deal”, “Packers trade Favre”. I’ve never been so irritated with one sports story in my life, mainly because it dominated every major sports network. Sadly with Favre in New York you can bet that after every game with the New York media there will be ample comparisons and break downs to how Favre and his successor Aaron Rodgers did.
At least now I actually get to take in some pre-season coverage and highlights without NFL Network being dominated by Favre.
Moving along, a special thank you to EA Sports for making me realize just how bad I actually am at Madden 09. NHL 08 seems to have set the standard in terms of game play now thanks to last years “AI Learning”. Upon firing up Madden 09 you’ll be run through a series of quick tests which will generate your “Madden IQ” and ultimately set the skill level you and your opposition should be playing at. Throughout the course of games and the season your IQ will increase or decrease based on events that happen throughout your Madden career making each individual game more competitive and less likely to suffer through the weekly blowout with default sliders in previous years.
If you’ve ever been a fan of the Madden franchise this one is a no brainer to purchase. I’ve been playing since the early years and haven’t faced a thrashing at the hands of the computer like I did in my first game, then again that may have had to do with the fact that my generated IQ probably was a lot higher then my overall playing ability. The positive to this new AI adjusting system works for both human sides which should make my dominance at our Madden Bowl a little less obvious.
Next a special HEYOO to the Arizona Cardinals for actually having a plethora of home games in December. Most notably the game taking place on December 7th…aka my birthday. Maybe, just maybe, I’ll be able to celebrate this one south of the border inside the friendly confines of University of Phoenix Stadium. Whether I leave the game with pants on will be debatable.
Finally and most importantly thank you for finally bringing football back. With the NFL pre-season in full swing it means not only that the regular season is a month away but it also signals the beginning of another year of Fantasy Football and of course that the NHL season isn’t far behind, one month to be exact.
I cant remember being this excited for an actual winter after having spent most of my time in the sunshine south of the border the last couple years. Granted if all works out well hopefully I’ll be there anyway watching the Cards and Coyotes.
