The latest greatest internet software is upon us. Years ago it was the birth of Instant messaging. Most of you probably became familiar with AOL Instant Messeneger, ICQ, or at the very least Microsoft’s MSN messenger. Who could forget gossiping to friends through MSN instant messenger as a teenager talking about who slept with who or how wasted you got or were going to get come the weekend. Great stuff, compelling and rich, even better when you have computer smarts and know of ways to gain remote access to peoples computers and log those conversations. Keyloggers, hidden cameras, and of course the funnest software program to ever play with SuB7 we’re all part of my repertoire.
Ten years ago I’d argue most people I knew had no clue what they were doing online or even how to turn it on. Most knew nothing about downloading movies, having a firewall or even antivirus for that matter. There was one reason and one reason alone back in the day to be online…Napster. How could anyone justify paying for CD’s when it was legal to download MP3′s through (still to this day) the greatest MP3 file sharing program. Still, forking over $400 or so dollars (my first burner was $450) for a cd writer back when wages weren’t as absurd as they are now was ludicrous.
After Metallica killed Napster the MSN revolution came upon us and everyone who had access to a computer found themselves becoming one step lazier as phoning family and friends apparently became much to complex.
Soon after the MSN revolution died down the cell phone text message revolution took shape. This was perfect for people like me who lived the secretive life when dating as you could feed lies through the text message without having to do it over the phone or face to face. Sure it’s still a lie but we’ve all done it and believe it isn’t as bad lying through text messaging. Of course though the incredible slang that came with MSN like LOL, ROFL, LMAO only escalated because spelling out full words on your cell phone was time consuming and one made to many spelling mistakes. 2MORO, BFF, BRB, BTW made life easier for all even though most of our parents had no god damn idea what we were talking about.
Then along came the birth of social networking behemoths MySpace and Facebook. There are others like BeBo, Hi5 but once someone uses either of the superpowers it’s lights out. I’ll never forget the first time I signed up for Facebook, I think it was in January 06 or 07 and I had at most 10 people I knew. Then it happened, friend requests and wall posts blew up like explosive diarrhea and Facebook was suddenly the “thing” to do. Everyday idiots we’re organizing lunch dates, parties, and other various meetings with the person working in the cubicle right next to them. Email and Instant messaging became all but extinct, as did ones privacy.
While I see a decline in Facebook use it’s only a matter of time before something new comes along. Wait a minute, thats what I’m supposed to be writing about.
Folks welcome to Digsby.
After reading everything I just said you probably think this is going to be some sort of revolutionary new product…well it’s not but I’ll be shocked if most people aren’t using it in the next couple of years. For one it controls every instant messenger service you have used and ties it all into one. Secondly it taps your emails to keep you updated, and thirdly the one that will probably get the most use is its interaction with social bookmarking sites.
Why am I telling you about this? Well the other day Facebook introduced Facebook chat but the sad reality is you cant chat with anyone unless you’re on Facebook. Sure great from a marketing perspective but does anyone actually spend that much time on there website? I know I dont, I log in, I check my PMs and then I surf to other superior sites like digg.com , spankwire.com, TSN, hotstickybun.com (riiight). Frankly Facebook chat sucks. The Digsby chat widget ties into your facebook profile and acts as an Instant Messenger on your computer which of course is a far better solution then having to idle on Facebook all god damn day.
Can you tell I’m not a Facebook fan yet?
Digsby, check it out soon enough you’ll be using it.

PS. This is for all you people posting photo albums on Facebook…here is another tip, SMARTEN UP and use a better service like Flickr
