I suppose thats why I don’t play sport select or gamble to much…usually when I predict things or ride the team/players hard they go out and put on a pretty respectable performance. It just goes to show that despite having one of the youngest and most inexperienced teams when you work hard the results will come. The problem from what I found missing from this team on most nights is intensity, it showed in the Calgary game. But finally we showed a little edge and you could tell early on we were going to finally generate some chances. Had it not been for Luongo on a couple of occasions early on the game could of been out of reach early, I suppose though thats why he makes the big bucks.
The good part about the prediction was that the lines finally appeared to have a little chemistry together. The top two lines looked to click and were generating chances while the bottom two played strong defensively. I’ve been dogging guys like Torres and Stortini fairly hard the past couple write ups but tonight they finally played the way they always should. The Oil finished with a measly ten hits but I believe Torres had over half of them, its amazing how much his game improves when he brings an up tempo physical style to the table. Stortini was Stortini…he still isnt a great hockey player overall but he fit in on that line perfectly and didnt make any mistakes tonight, there job of shutting down the Sedins (or Pinky and the two brains as Mr. Boogard would say) line was phenominal.
I was right about one thing though and that was finally seeing Sam Gagner on the powerplay and I have to say its about time. While he wasnt spectacular you can just tell the rookie has some incredible on ice vision and will be a future franchise player for us in a couple years. His points arent amassing by any means but if he continues to play like that they will come…he got absolutely robbed twice by Luongo tonight, once in the second and then again in the shootout.
Finally what can you say about Mr. Horcoff. He’s had to listen to it from the fans it seems for longer then he should and its about time he gets the respect he deserves. He has never been a flashy hockey player for us but the work ethic night in and night out shows what kind of player and leader he is to this hockey club and yet you still here negative talk and his name in trade rumors all the time. I honestly don’t know what else this guy has to do to prove himself to the fans. Is he a superstar? No. He isnt flashy but his results come from consistent hard work, something a lot of the other players on this team could learn.
But enough, it was a good win and an exciting game and it more then made up for that travesty of a hockey game from Saturday night. Next up is Thursday evening with crying Ryan back in town. We won a game, we win one Thursday thats two in a row…we win one Saturday and that my friends is called a winning streak.
Havent seen to many of those this year.
